Typography with Steve Simpson

At Gray's School of Art they have regular working artists and designers giving a lecture into their work and their art life this week was Illustrator and typographer Steve Simpson his lecture was just hilarious, and his work was really cool! I loved how he was describing signs and trying to make signs and labels beautiful again, using typography in an image instead of on top and leaving ugly commercial visual world behind and giving it some pizazz! It was really inspiring as well to see someone who thought to himself he wasn't in the right 'category' of career so many times but finally got there and now does what he loves on his own terms not on anyone else's!

I think some of the people in the start of Art School are getting quite scared that the time is now to develop and become someone, but i think it just shows them that now is all about exploring and embracing everything! we can do anything we want without getting judged too harshly and we're to take our time like we all want to be into our career already but what's the harm in just learning and exploring we're only at the beginning and i think people forget that!

After the lecture he was doing another sort of informal chat and activity at the union so went with 2 of my communication design friends and he introduced us to http://www.behance.net/ which i think i might go onto, he says that's how he got most of his commissions and his work through this cause a lot of business's go on to look for up and coming designers and artists. Then we got a challenge to make up a type using our own set of rules. so i came up with a random typography but I think actually its quite cool was interesting seeing other peoples from afar too, to see what they came up with!
So there you go my weird and wonderful typography i know the kerning might be off a bit and might not be the most legible but i love the quirkiness of it!
wanted to try this out in a more artistic way and so the page was quite plain and simple, but had a clear message!

Also whilst Steve was there he let us have a flick through his sketchbooks and his little children's story book but it wasn't  published but it was sooo cute and quirky as it was just so imaginative as it was based on colours and the mixing of colours but making them animated. then it was home time for us  it really topped off my day :)
Thanks for reading
